Annual report 2023: Sustainability report

The business of Erillisverkot responds to society’s need to prepare for and build capacity for disruptions under normal conditions and for emergency conditions. Hence, the sustainability work in 2023 was still motivated by the Russian attack on Ukraine and preparedness for a potential energy crisis and power outages. We test the capability of our services and practice contingency regularly. Although the biggest fears of energy shortages at the start of the year were not realised, energy questions require constant vigilance, also because of the environmental targets.

Our customers are satisfied with our services and responsibility

We asked for our customers’ views on our sustainability as part of the annual customer experience survey. For example, 88 per cent of the respondents to the 2022 survey considered Erillisverkot to be responsible or very responsible.

We updated our sustainability questions for the 2023 survey, because we wanted to map out the views of our customers differently than before for the materiality analysis. The customers were still very satisfied with the sustainability of our services in general, which became the second highest ranked area. The highest ranking area was the security of services, and the quality of services was the third. Our customers see the sustainability of our services as a resource-related aspect, which means keeping up the good level is important.

From the point of view of the effects of our operations, the most important sustainability themes are responsible procurement, development of expertise, and occupational safety and health. The respondents felt that Erillisverkot had succeeded, in particular, in security, reliability and the operational reliability of connections, such as networks. The areas with most room for improvement were transparency, sustainability communications and environmental matters, such as climate change mitigation.

Our sustainability focus areas in 2023:

  • Special attention to energy: energy efficiency system ETJ+
  • First steps in DEI: familiarisation with DEI themes (diversity, equity, inclusion)
  • Towards a renewed sustainability reporting: the CSRD directive and ESRS standards
  • Materiality analysis based on double materiality
  • Changes to sustainability management: as of the start of 2024, sustainability themes will be discussed by the executive team four times a year instead of the separate sustainability management team
  • Updating the sustainability strategy and programme
