There is always risk involved in the Rally. Finnish special conditions bring additional challenge to the organisation. For example, in no other world championship rally is there such a large number of spectators standing by the road sides, or so many roads that connect to the race line in the legs. A dense tree stand also adds to the challenge.

We used to build huge constructions and link masts before, and they still never worked as well as VIRVE, says Mahonen.
VIRVE is a significant communications network in the event, but other systems are in use as well. Within the legs there are still 200 VHF radios in use, and naturally the GSM network is being used as well. Additionally, regular phones have been securely set in the starting and finishing lines.
